The education system at the HFF is unique among German language media academies. Alongside the study involved in each course, the University aims to bring students together in interdisciplinary group projects. This enables students to learn how to work as part of a team under realistic conditions resembling the high division of labour in the world of media and to develop their availability, flexibility and ability to co-operate. New forms of information and documentation, the use of new technologies and worldwide networking mean that film academies are facing new challenges, which are reflected in the courses offered.
Media academies are also dependant upon a strong practical-orientation in terms of teaching. The HFF guarantees this by, among other things, using special staff planning where professors are concerned, involving permanent posts, five-year contracts, honorary professorships and part-time professorships. On top of this, the HFF also offers half-professorships and temporary lectureships, guaranteeing a constant exchange with media in practice.
