The Master’s Degree course in Media Studies is an extremely research-oriented course, both in terms of academic research on basic principles and use-oriented research reflecting on artistic practice. This orientation emphasises the special profile of this Master’s course as a media studies course at an art University. Students will learn both creative and academic and theoretical and methodical skills in the field of modern audiovisual media and their academic and journalistic surroundings. The course focuses on aspects of the fields of aesthetic of reception, media analysis, media concepts and planning and qualitative and quantitative audience and target group research. The Master’s course prepares students for careers that involve the research and planning of mass communication processes and the conceptual accompaniment of their audiovisual design. The significance of media communication has grown in accordance with the societal, technological and economical development processes. This Master’s course accommodates the demand that results from this growth, namely the increased demand for qualified experts in the domain of media studies who can accompany these processes on both a conceptual and a critically reflective level.
In addition, students will develop the skills required to independently plan and implement both creative academic development projects and empirical research projects. They will also obtain key qualifications such as the ability to work as part of a team, presentation techniques, being able to use modern information and communication techniques, which are integrated into the course and being able to independently critically and competently reflect on artistic practice. The international orientation of the course content enables students to aim for and indeed be employed in the international media market all over the world.
This Master’s course aims to prepare students for careers that focus on the connection between art and mass communication media in audiovisual media on the one hand and art and society on the other, academically reflecting on these connections and furthering their creative development.
Students will be prepared for the responsible functions involved in media studies and on the media market:
Media and market research, cultural and event management, programme planning and development in audiovisual media, guidance in the production and distribution of audiovisual media, journalistic, editorial and conceptual activities in audiovisual media, concepts and planning of training and further education opportunities supported by media and academy/university teaching and research.
The Master’s course in Media Studies requires a successfully completed BA degree in a subject belonging to the field of media and communication studies, or in a discipline of social sciences, humanities or art with proof of achievements related to cultural studies and/or art history and aesthetics or a comparable degree from a university/academy.
The standard duration of this course is 4 semesters. The course should be completed in the fourth semester with the submission of the Master’s thesis.
The degree Master of Arts (MA) will be awarded upon successful completion of this course.
